This year’s Abacus Charitable Foundation Ball was hailed a resounding success after more than £21,000 was raised for charity.
The ball, a must on the calendar for many in Guernsey, always takes an exciting theme and this year was no different as world-renowned sporting legends descended on Guernsey for the event.
Kenny Logan, Ally McCoist, Peter Scrivener, Phil Greening and Keith Wood helped Abacus to raise a grand total of £21,794 for the Wooden Spoon, the sport of rugby’s national charity for disadvantaged children.
The national Wooden Spoon Society has agreed to match the total raised and now more than £43,500 is in the coffers to go towards helping local children with special needs.
The Welsh Boys Aloud got the evening off to a fine start before master of ceremonies Barry Williams took over.
Money was raised through a music competition in which the winner won a trip for two in Tuscany.
An auction held after dinner boasted some fine sporting memorabilia including framed rugby shirts signed by the last five Lions Captains, two tickets to the Australia v England game at Twickenham, a 1966 photographic montage of the World Cup winning football team signed by all the team members and a game of golf for three with Kenny Logan at Loch Lomond.
The sports stars submitted themselves to a grilling with questions from the guests about their sporting and personal lives.
Abacus Charitable Foundation Chairman Lisa Crawford said the event had been a huge success.
“The guests were completely engaged by the sporting theme and the sports stars really got into the spirit. We are delighted to be able to raise such a great total to help youngsters in Guernsey,” she said.
